So in the context of career based professions, I’ve noticed that compared to other (mainly essential) ones that there is little to no sense of comradery among truckers.
For example: police, military, firefighters, nurses (among other medical workers), teachers, and most trades all seem to have some sense of comradery. Like have you seen a funeral for a fallen law enforcement officer? Or a firefighter? Or soldiers killed in action?
Do truckers who get killed in wrecks ever receive that type of a funeral? The most i’ve seen is a roadside memorial. Nothing ever with a multi-hundred participant turn out broadcasted on television.
Its even reflected in the way some truckers drive and behave. Maxed out drivers who are too egotistical to let someone lighter pass them downhill. Old school truckers who hate on people who drive their automatic aero-dynamic trucks wearing pyjamas and socks. Beeping the horn to let someone know you’re in their way at a truck stop instead of tapping the window. Parking bobtails all the way at the back. Making 0 effort to park the reefer trailer furthest away from other trucks. Mocking instead of helping an inexperienced driver back up. Taking way too long to fuel up and/or taking long breaks at fuel islands.
I mean lets face it, many truckers don’t exactly make an effort to make the job easier for other drivers. I think the Canadian freedom convoy was the only time in my life when a group of truckers could unite against something. And in my opinion, the unity that was displayed could’ve been for better pay, better truck accommodations, de-regulation, etc.
All the professions I listed above are essential for a modern functional society. They are also career based with a relatively low turnover rate. And as far as I can tell, most people who work in those professions feel some sense of comradery among themselves.
So why don’t most truckers seem to feel the same way?
