I’ve been wanting to get my CDL for a number of years and I’m finally going to do it. I got my permit last year and did a little bit with a family friend but that fell through and I got stuck working other jobs for another year. I just got my permit again.
I am currently planning on going to school from August to October. I can get the 2k for the school independently. My fiance’s father is a truck driver for a bigger carrier and he insists I should just go off on a company truck for a year like he did. He also insists that I will have to do that even if I get my license independently. I’m not expecting to just get my license and find the cushiest job home at 5pm every day no matter what but I don’t want to get sent across the country and not ever come home for a year. I would be okay going away for a week or two and having a weekend home. I also don’t want to owe a company back for the license just like I don’t want to go out and sign a lease right away. I just want to get my license and drive a company truck for a few years and try to find a stable housing situation.
Is this completely unreasonable? Should I just go sign on to a company instead of going to school? Will a company look down on me for going to school instead of training through them?
