So I’m currently a flatbed driver employed with Roehl. I did their GYCDL program so I’m locked into a 120k mile contract. I’ve been solo with them since August, 22nd. I’m sitting at 30,720 miles.
I’m not making any statements or expressing any opinions here, just getting a second opinion on my job situation.
According to their app I’m averaging 68¢ per mile which includes Mileage pay, Pick up/ Drop pay $80 (not sure what that is lol), Tarp/Untarp pay, $30 for small parts and $60 for large tarps, $790, Live load pay $120, Detention pay $9 (I always forgot to claim it but it’s only like $15 an hour), New York City pay $75, and Oversize pay $43.
I get paid every week and my checks have amounted to:
August: $473, $591, $591, $550, $266
September: $394, $562, $1,422, $354
October: $697, $1,109, $845, $485
November: $260, $911, $928, $226, $148
December: $646, $1,153, $1,624, $359
January: $312, $564, $826 and this coming check should be pretty good as I took an OD load from Decatur, IL to Mesa, AZ
Am I making enough? Is the industry just slow? Am I just being a whiny bitch? Lol.
It seem as that I started out taking a lot of longer distance loads but lately I’ve been taking a lot of shorter loads, 300-600 miles. Which obviously translates to more time getting loaded, unloaded, doing securement and tarping.
Keep in mind I’m a rookie and a slow learner so load securement takes me anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours, sometimes even longer if it’s something I have no clue what to do with lol. I also seem to haul a wide variety of different stuff so more often than not it’s something new to me. I haven’t gotten any sort of complaints from them so far lol.
I’ve been thinking of going with Central Oregon Trucking company because I want to move out west, specifically to California, maybe Oregon (yeah, yeah I know a lot of people dislike California, I don’t care.) I also like running out west much better but I will say I asked Roehl to send me west and they always deliver. Probably not for awhile though because my credit is dogshit (like 500 bad lol). I also don’t really have any money saved up or anything.
Long term I’d like to haul containers out of the port in Long Beach, CA
So far I like Roehl as a company, they are very friendly and understanding so long as you have a good attitude. My only issue is that it seems the pay isn’t so great (but I’m new so what can I do? Lol) and Roehl doesn’t employ out of California and other western states like Colorado, Idaho, Washington and Oregon. They do hire out of Arizona but I’m not a huge fan of Arizona lol.
