Encountered two in a row of those on a short drive today (and to clarify, this is in Indiana, flat land for days). One particular egregious case, the driver was gradually slowing down to almost 45 on a 70 speed limit interstate, as I was passing on the left, I could see in the corner of the eye he‘s busy talking on a handheld phone (no headset). Clearly he accidentally turned cruise control off and is losing speed coasting. No biggie, we’ve all made similar mistakes. As I’m about to switch back to the right, he must have suddenly realized that, and he just GUNS IT and shoots past me. If I wasn’t the type to triple check my mirrors every time I overtake, passing me on the right like that could’ve led to something much worse.
What exactly are they thinking? Is it just the lizard brain instinct kicking in? Or just not thinking at all about what they’re doing? It’s not even the messing up that I don’t get, we’re all human after all, but I just assume it’s common sense that if people are passing you because of your mistake or distraction, it’s kind of basic manners to at least let people finish their maneuvers.
