For reference, I’m an RVer. I know most of you guys hate us, but I do my best to not be a stereotypical RV driver and make it easier on you guys. Anyways, was heading down I-64 late into the night a couple days ago, and temps were rapidly dropping. I think it was currently about 16f. House batteries were getting low since the heat pump was pulling so much, and when I pressed the button to start the generator, nothing happened. I knew I’d lose heat soon if I didn’t get the batteries charged (minus engine heat off) so I pulled to the shoulder to see what was going on.
About 5 minutes after I started tinkering with the genny, a truck pulls behind me. Driver hops out and asks if I’m broken down. I tell him no, and that I’m just trying to get my generator running. He asks if I have heat. I tell him that currently I only have the engine heat, but I’m doing some research to bypass the oil level sensor on the generator so it’ll stop shutting off.
He asks me repeatedly if I need anything, and says that he broke down this morning 600 miles north and didn’t have heat in 10 degree weather for 2 hours while waiting for roadside and that “nobody deserves to freeze to death”.
I thank him at least 5 times and tell him I’m alright, but he sticks around while I’m tinkering with the generator. About 5 minutes later, I have the oil level sensor bypassed and the generator is running. I give him a wave, and he pulls back onto the highway and gives me a long blast of the air horn and waves.
Great to see there’s still kind people out there.
