When I was in grade school, my brother a couple years older than me was going on a field trip for school. I dont remember where, some place fun, and I was jealous.
My dad was a local truck driver at the time, and thought it would be nice to have me join him for the day on his routes. I used to really like going, because back at the warehouse they always had the hot chocolate packets with the little marshmallows, and they had a vending machine with 5 cent Hawaiian Punch cans, and I was not in a school.
Anyways, on this day, we were headed south on a major tollway not far from where we live. As we were coming up to a toll booth, we were along side a school bus that was filled with kids. I didn’t know if it was my brothers bus that he was taking on the field trip or not, but I started waving excitedly thinking my brother was on that bus.
It was a number of miles further south that we hit another toll booth, we went through just fine, but right on the other side of the toll booth my dads truck was surrounded by 5-8 squad cars, and my dad was escorted to the shoulder. I dont remember if they had guns drawn or not, but they pulled us both out of the truck and kept us separated. They started asking me who this man was, and I told them, “that’s my dad.” And then they’d ask if he told me to tell them that. Several times we went back and forth. I had no clue why this was happening, and either did my dad, until one of the officers finally told us that a school bus driver called us in because he saw a kid waving for help.
Woops.
Sorry dad, but I’ll never wave at a school bus again.
