I’ve been working at my current job for about 7 months now which is where most of my CDL experience is. I’m only 5 months away from a year of experience so I don’t want to do anything stupid. The pay at my current local job is 48 cpm. That’s it. The trucks and trailers are early 2000s t800 daycabs, mine being an 04 model. These trucks are just wore out I can’t even hear myself think when I’m driving these things.
The yard is about 20 minutes from my house which I like a lot. And the office people are nice. I’ve gotten quite use to our crappy trucks (mine in particular I’ll quit if it blows up lol). Like I said it is a local company so it’s not huge. The owner runs mostly everything and is treating me good enough so far. The problem is work has been really slow lately and it’s to the point where I’m only getting 2-3 loads a week averaging maybe 300 bucks per week.
Anyway I’ve been offered a better job opportunity where I get to drive a 2015 volvo vnm. still work locally and I get to take the truck home. The pay is 57 cpm starting and they’ll raise it after 90 days. They offer detention pay layover pay aswell as load/unload assist pay. The only problem I have is that their yard is about two and a half hours from my home and I don’t want to leave my car up there if the truck needs maintenance or something.
Anyway I’m not sure what to do. They called me and made an offer I filled out their application and they’re ready to move forward. I haven’t told my current boss and the reason for that is I want to make sure I’m getting onto a better deal but I really don’t want to do him wrong. I want to give atleast a week notice.
At the same time I’m not making enough money because the loads aren’t there. They approached me not even a week ago and things are moving fast. I just want to do the right thing and keep my relationships solid.
