I’m taking the plunge into getting a CDL via a mega corporation (or at least, I’m seeing if they’ll call me back, hah). My college stopped offering my degree in the middle of me getting it so…yeah, I decided it’s a sign to pursue something else. And I’ve been looking at trucking for years, but never pulled the trigger. I wish I had money saved up for a school–I totally get why everyone recs that–but alas, I don’t, so I’d be going the mega corp route.
I’ve been doing my research, and see lots of folks very clearly saying stuff has slowed way down.
Do you think that’ll cause them to slow down hiring students? Or do you think that because I’ll be a cheap body in a seat, they’ll still do training? (Sorry–I don’t WANT to be a cheap body in a seat, but as far as I hear it that’s just the reality for a newbie in a contract.)
Second question – I saw a comment somewhere (forgot where, was yesterday) that someone was out on medical leave for a month and their company was really cool with it, probably because of the slowdown.
If I set up in a low cost of living state, do you think I’d be ok if I go through the program and all, and they just don’t have miles to give me? Like, I think I can get into a position where my costs are under $1k a month. Even if I’m getting no miles, does it seem likely I can at least keep my head above water if my costs are that low?
Lastly–for those who’ve gone through Prime or Hirschbach RECENTLY through their trainee programs, what was your experience like?
