Question regarding some DOT rules

Technically not a CDL vehicle so delete if not allowed. So my friend and I are on an event crew and were taking some event gear to a destination when we were pulled over. We were under the impression that since we were a non CDL vehicle we were fine with the DOT number on the truck (rental Penske 26-footer). However that wasn’t the case and we were informed our company needed a DOT number before we could continue. Our boss sent in the application but we are stopped until we here an update so we can avoid any penalties. Google is being very vague and the DOT call centers are closed where we are right now.
My questions to anyone that would happen to know: is there a way to check the status of our DOT number? How long does it take for a DOT number to be cleared for service after we send in the application? And we were hit with a 24 hour out-of-service order just for not having a DOT, does that time start counting from when we got pulled over? Thanks for anyone that can help us understand this whole thing a little bit better.
