I’m pretty new to log trucks, and I’m having trouble getting up hills on dirt tracks in the forest.
Where I am is early autumn, so everything is dry. The dirt tracks are turning to powder. I drive a 580hp Merc in a truck and dog combination, running 30psi in the drives off road, axles fully locked. I’ve tried crawling up in low gear, but started spinning wheels and digging holes. I’ve tried going up in 7th (16 speed auto box operating in manual mode), still ended up spinning wheels, and had to be towed by the forwarder.
Anyone got any good advice? Gear to use, revs? Anything? I’m getting sick of feeling like the useless new guy.
The other drivers are great, and have given me a few tips, but we really don’t get the opportunity to talk much, leaving the yard at different times and running different routes at different times.
