Folks,
I’ll introduce myself, I’m a fleet technician and seeing so many of y’all out working especially the new folks, it makes me happy. Now there is a concern just to make sure everyone who is new knows. Be careful with retreads.
Now I know plenty of you hate them, but they are they are the reality that we have to deal with in the sense that companies and sometimes owner operators use them to save. Now if you run them, please do the following:
•Run them only on drive axles
•Ensure they are retreaded by a reputable company
•Inspect them often to ensure they are not peeling off the tire
DO NOT use them on steers. You can loose a rear and be fine but if you loose a steer, you are a danger to everyone and yourself. Retreads can be dangerous if not inspected and acquired from a good source.
For those who are unsure if they have retreads, there will be markings on the tires as well as the additive used to glue the tread on will be very noticeable. There are also seams that will go across the tread that will be noticeable as well.
Be safe, y’all. Us technicians hope you guys make it home everytime.
