Why is cycling the key bad when restarting a stalled truck?

Today I had a really bad day of driving. Missed some gears and a few close calls. Any advice is appreciated. I’m normally a safe and careful driver and almost never have close calls. I delivered pizza for 1.5 years and have never had an accident.
