So today I talked to a pretty reputable small/mid sized heavy haul company (around 30 drivers) local to me that is hiring OTR drivers. Im pretty new to trucking and I’m wanting to get into the heavy haul game (yes I got my doubles and triples) and this company was willing to give me the chance. So basically the recruiter told me they would start me with a flatbed trailer and over time as I gain more experience and trust, start giving me bigger loads/trailers in this case more $$. They would start me at 20% of the load! they run what is called a “straight hauls” meaning (ex. Im in Oklahoma and I have a load going to Houston, Texas. I would make the haul to there drop off and pickup another load in Houston and head back to their yard in Oklahoma, also being payed the 20% for that). That being said the recruiter also said that I will always have another load ready for me in the location I’m heading to so as soon as I drop my original load off ill have one to head back in with, and that I wont ever be running empty. Recruiter also said that the avg driver starting makes about 75-80k a year and that their top drivers running their biggest loads make anywhere from 110-130k a year!. Now to my question…. Does this percentage pay seem worth it? Is it considered low? Is it risky? Am I too gullible? or am I just over thinking this and I should just take the opportunity and gain this experience in a field I want to make my career.
