So i live in the KC MO area. I started out operating heavy equipment for a railroad got my Cdl and started hauling railroad equipment regionally. Then got a local job hauling vac tankers, home every night and been doing that for 4 years. Now my dad is ready to retire and wanting me to start taking over his excavation business(mostly small equipment and very locally based). So I’m needing something to do during winter, the rainy weeks, and when things just get slow. I’ve worked on diesel equipment, trucks, tractors everything all my life. I thought I may buy an older truck with cash and do some regional or otr when things get slow.
The thing is I don’t know much about the owner op side. I do know I probably don’t want to mess with my own authority at least right away. I figure Id just start a new LLC. If I buy the truck are there companies that will let me just run during certain times of the year or when I need to? Will they let me run an older truck? I have a perfect record and 5+ years experience. Just not experienced with how all the owner op stuff really works outside of leasing a new truck on with a huge carrier.
