Said most Megas definitely do not own their trucks outright.
Mentioned all the trucks are on a loan/lease deal from a manufacturer directly or even work out a use agreement with Ryder or Penske.
Said, when one of his drivers get a flat tire for example the company has it worked out with Ryder/Penske because his mega he works for rents the truck from them on a use agreement, rather than loan the truck.
So basically Ryder owns their trucking company? Wondering how many companies actually don’t own themselves and realistically work for another company, even though a company with company drivers…
in other words, in theory imagine we work for idk say Prime Inc. and then Prime is owned by Swift and Swift is then owned/controlled by Ryder/Penske… so essentially we all “really work for” Ryder/Penske? Because Ryder/Penske own the truck and then swift or prime just rent/lease Ryder/Penske’s truck. Stuff drivers in the truck.
Then went on the say that because there’s so many trucks out there not moving around that’s why the turnover rate is so high for megas. Mentions that the companies that own their equipment don’t really have a high turnover rate, doing just fine. It’s Ryder/Penske and all these silly employment schemes and agreements messing everything up between companies.
Ops manager also went on to admit basically that their shop mechanics aren’t their own company mechanics, the mechanics are actually Ryder mechanics who are assigned to their company terminal to fix their Ryder trucks masked as company trucks. So yeah, the company door says Prime/Swift on the door. And yeah it’s all decaled up and everything but really it’s a Ryder/Penske truck or the manufacturers truck.
Also stated companies who don’t own their equipment outright are more likely to report on drivers DACs whereas companies who own their equipment outright wouldn’t even bother.
