Early this morning I was up at the front office getting my paperwork ready for the day. Another drive came in, ranting and raving abour how dispatch hadn’t gotten them their route, and the trailer they were supposed to haul hadn’t been unloaded from last week.
It became immediately apparent that this driver had been drinking. And was quite drunk. His speech was slurred, he couldn’t keep his train of thought or control the volume of his voice. Not to mention he smelled of alcohol.
He continued to talk with one of the dock workers and I went out to my truck. I immediately contacted my manager to notify him of the situation.
Now an investigation is going. People are being interviewed. Stories are being corroborated. I have no ill will for this driver. He’s actually a really nice and funny guy. But I take safety very seriously.
If he had gone out and hurt someone behind the wheel that’s not just on him. My conscience wouldn’t be clean knowing I could’ve stopped him.
