Hi guys! Long time lurker. Own a business unrelated to the trucking industry but clearly everything moves by truck if you sell anything. Anyway, had a semi load of stuff that needed to be moved from Los Angeles to Toronto for a trade show next month. Contacted a trucking company that I’ve used multiple times without issue. 95% of the time they handle my stuff themselves. This time they contracted it out. I was fine with this bc it’s the nature of the game. Anyway, my stuff gets picked up (I wasn’t there but the company raised no eye brows with my staff). Everything was routine but then the “ “company” that has my stuff goes silent. Nothing can be tracked. No response for 3 days. The people who contracted them are freaking out for me. They’re saying it was a fake company (common in socal) and now my stuff is being held for ransom somewhere. The people who picked it up want $25,000. This all sounds like a bad movie. Is this common? Is someone messing with me? I insure my own stuff so worst case I am fine. Has anyone heard of anything like this?
