Fresh out of school, and I’ve been applying for jobs. Lots of megas calling to offer their pity prices of .35 to .43 CPM. Hours long interviews to be told “3 weeks on, 2 days at home. Can you commit to 12 months?”. Finally, I find a local company that is awesome. They are a young company, young owners, ambitious, they take care of their drivers, good CPM. So I go back to dmv and get some endorsements they say they really want me to have. I pass and get endorsements. Fast forward to my OTR trip with my trainer. We’ve been driving a few days and every day I’ve been driving, and he has been telling me I’m a great driver. I do everything right. Yada Yada Yada. Well today at the end of our trip, the owner called me up and let me know, he really wants to bring me on but only if I get my manual restriction removed because that’s the last vehicle he has at his yard. And now I’m bummed out. I told him before this test run that I wanted to get a year experience under my belt and THEN I would go back to school and get my manual endorsement. I don’t have anymore money for school. My savings are drained from going to school. And now when I get back I gotta break the news to him that I won’t be driving for his company because I’m not gonna have the money to go back to school. It sucks because I could have landed a dream job, but now this license is bout to go unused because I simply cannot except the low pay from megas. I’ve got kids and a wife who were relying on me and this job and now I’ve fumbled the bag. Thanks for reading my ted talk.
