In the market for a new job, and need some advice / pointers.

Hey All…

So, I was unfortunately laid off back in March, and decided to take some time off to take care of some personal things around the house. Well, now it’s time to get back into it, but I have to admit… I’m not used to job searching. Every job I’ve had since graduating high school, even before I was trucking, I’ve known an insider that “got me in”. I have no idea what to look for in a company or what companies look for in a Driver.

I’m based in Canada’s National Capital Region and I have 7 years, (690,000 kms), of local dry van experience between 2 companies. Both on dedicated routes. I have clean drivers abstract and CVOR. I also have a few extra certifications, (not entirely related to trucking), but they have long since expired.

Would I be correct in the assumption in that after 7 years experience, I should be in a position to choose what I want in a job and how much I want to get paid? I mean, I’m 42… I’m not some fresh out of high school teenager, begging for minimum wage. There are some things I’m willing to do, but others I really don’t want to.

I’d love to challenge myself to try new things and learn new skills, but I’m wary of biting off more than I can chew.

Any advice and guidance is welcome.
