I’m writing this here because truckers are the only ones that’ll know wtf I’m talking about.
I’ve been at the same LTL carrier for 5 years that my father had been at for over 20. He ran linehaul, I’ve been a combo driver, so a little bit of everything for those that don’t know what combo is. Im 29 for context.
So anyone that has ever built a set of doubles or more know the level of difficult it is to couple your trailers with the dolly already hooked to your lead trailer. Most people I know, myself included, have to set the Dolly up in front of the tail trailer, go get the lead and come back, get everything close together and then do the coupling. A little more work but it’s easier. My old man could effortlessly couple trailers without having to do that. And one day I tried….. For about 15 minutes and said fuck this lmao. Called him and we had a laugh about me not being able to do it and he just said what all dads say. “You’ll get it someday”
I tried again last night for the first time since then which was a few years ago. Not because I wanted to. My equipment got changed and I didn’t feel like unhooking everything and starting over so I just kept the dolly hooked to my lead. And I did that shit yo. Like in 1 try. With 1 pull up. You would have thought I’d been doing for years. Luck or not, I finally fucking did that. I was happy af for like 1 whole minute because I wanted to call my dad and tell him and through my excitement, I forgot he passed in February. So my joy turned into instant meltdown. I’m still kind of happy knowing I can do it but not being able to make that phone call sucks. But I would like to say to anyone new in this field or just in general, if you feel like something is too hard and it’s just not working out, just try that shit again.
“You’ll get it someday”
