I’ve been trailer trucking for over 3 years now. I’m 28 years old. Prior to trucking I was a foreman for a state maintenance contractor going over 5 years and even had a brief stint working for the state as a utility inspector. I’ve paid my debts, built my credit, bought a house, and have been wanting to leave this field for over a year now but I’ve found it to be extremely difficult. It seems like having truck driver on your resume and employment history is a bigger poop stain than having a felony.
I’ve tried to move within the industry into logistics or transportation management but I just get denied but told they need drivers.
I’ve tried looking into warehousing but they ignore my 7 years of supervisory experience and see me nothing more than an order picked or forklift operator.
I even tried going back to the state as an inspector or contract monitor and they just said I would be better suited as an operator now that I have a CDL.
This is very depressing. I’m either stuck in a truck or viewed as a general laborer. Is there a way out of this? I’m not trying to make the same money I make now, but I’d still like to transition into something that’s a career and stable and not just an hourly laborer position. I should have stuck with what I was doing.
