If you’re in a 10 speed, on a 6% downgrade, use 8th gear, full jake, and get set up about 45 mph before you begin the decent. Let the RPM creep up to 2000 for just about any motor, then hard brake all the way to 1000 rpm as quick as possible so the brakes stay cool and have time to get cooler before the next cycle. At 2000 rpm, hard brake to 1000 again. Keep full jake on the entire time. Turn the engine fan on to help as well.
7% grade, same thing, 7th gear, set up at 30 mph.
8% grade, same thing, 6th gear, 20 mph.
9% grade, same thing, 5th gear, 15 mph.
If done properly, you will notice that it takes a long time for the truck to gain speed as the engine brake holds back in the proper gear. The whole time, the brakes are cooling off. Also affords you stopping power if a wreck happens in front of you. Your brake pads last much longer like this.
This is my method, my brake pads last for many years.
