Howdy folks, I’m here for some advice. My dad got into trucking just about two years ago and he was able to get himself a job with a local trucking company in a more rural area where we’re from, specializing in heavy haul and lowboy loads (oilfield pipe, excavators, etc.) This was a real career change after working in a manufacturing setting for most of his life. My dad is a very intelligent man on the street side and is a great hustler but doesn’t really understand the knowledge behind running his own business. This is where I come into play; I am a senior in college this year, majoring in Marketing and have grown to love the idea of the supply chain and logistics industry. I like the idea of becoming the, “bad guy” (a freight broker), some day. My dad just recently purchased a brand new 3500 dually and is looking to purchase his 40ft trailer here soon as this setup is what best fits his financial accommodation. Knowing that my dad is getting himself into the business as a owner operator, what kinds of factors should he take into account when running the business so that he doesn’t run himself financially into the hole? Example: fuel, distance, pay of loads, maintenance, steady flow of income
