For guys starting in trucking today. If this helps one person it was worth it.
For all the guys starting their career don’t ever feel stupid for asking when you don’t know, or you asking just to verify/compare what you know . If something is worth paying for to learn its worth working at it for free if someone gives your a chance to be taught.
Get all of the knowledge you can.
By no means am I the smartest or best at anything but you have to be willing to give it a try to make yourself better.
I’ve had a commercial license since I was 18 and I’m 30 now, I consider myself decent but still get out to look when I’m backing up or not afraid to set my brakes if a turn is to tight even in the middle of a busy road. I’ve run fuel tankers and oversized oilfield and the biggest thing is to ask if you don’t know. If another driver is having trouble get out and offer help instead of filming, and on the flip side don’t be afraid to take help either. It is the way you make a living and an extra check or a helping hand can prevent hours of cleanup.
When driving and someone almost hits your let it go. Sometimes people are rude and sometimes people just make mistakes; best bet is to chalk it up to the latter and get over it.
Mega carriers are great but they churn drivers out and they don’t care what happens to you in the long run. The few week driving school is not going to teach you to be proficient at anything. I still feel the best drivers are the ones that were taught by local companies who let you get to know your truck in a familiar area.
Trucking has been an amazing thing for me, I have made a lot of money and lost a lot of money in it. I’ve been lucky enough to drive some amazing trucks and see things I wouldn’t have otherwise. There have been long nights and long days but I wouldn’t trade what I get to do for much else.
