I’ve had my CDL for 10 years. All of those years except last two years I’ve drove for the government. So I don’t know anything about the computer logs. Long story short I quit working for them to be with wife on road. She’s a travel nurse. I’m currently working for a farmer in South Dakota. He told me as long as we stay within 150 miles from the farm, We are exempt from CDL permits like pulling double trailer’s.
1. I don’t have the double endorsement. I can’t find anything in rules saying if a employee is exempt from this as well. I have found the laws saying a farmer is exempt as long as he’s not further then 150 miles from his farm. Does anyone know if that’s true for me as well or where can I find the laws?
2. Can I get my double endorsement if I’m out of state? Like I said we are on the road. Staying at one place for 26 weeks at a time. My license and home is in a different state. We don’t head home often. So can I head to a local DMV and add the endorsement to my license? I know there’s a test and have been studying for it.
3. None of his truck have the EDL in them or paper logs. Since I’m the only one with a CDL, He’s asked me to drive to another state to pick up a new disk that he bought. It’s a 12 hour drive one way. The truck I’m taking has a sleeper cap on it. So I’ll be sleeping in the truck. I said I’ll need logs and he said we are exempt.I have a hard time believing this. Will paper logs be ok? Can I get the paper logs at a truck stop? Or where do I get paper logs?
I am licensed to drive out of state and have a current DOT physical. When I was back home a few weeks ago I did update my DOT physical at my local DMV. Sorry if these are stupid questions. I don’t want to be put in a bad situation. I won’t be putting my CDL at risk. This is my first post so if it’s messed up I’m sorry. Also thank you all for any advice and feedback!
