i just started OTR trucking. This morning was my 3rd shift by myself (without mentor) and i got into a bad preventable accident.
i had to use the restroom… like bad.
for context – i am a petite young female, so i don’t feel exactly comfortable when i have to walk far in the dark (it was 6am & still dark out) and i can’t really just pee in a cup..
anyways. i learned the hard way that ALL truck stops/rest areas are PACKED at night/early morning. I went to three before I found one i could park at.
When i finally got to one that i saw parking at, i went to make a turn into a spot, cut it way too close, and the side of my trailer smashed into a guy’s tractor on the passenger side. his headlight, rear view mirror, and bumper were ultimately fucked. he was able to drive off though. no damage to my trailer.
called cops and the sheriff said he didn’t need to make a police report but he gave me and the driver i hit and “accident exchange form” so basically our insurance and contact info.
i spoke to my company and they said to continue with my load and safety and my fleet manager will be in contact with me tomorrow. i’m so embarrassed and ashamed. i just started this career and wasn’t wanting a dirty record from the jump…
i’m not really sure what i’m looking for by posting this. i guess, reassurance that my life isn’t over. doesn’t help i’m emotional and couldn’t stop crying like a baby.
thank you in advance if anyone can tell me it’ll be okay.
EDIT: oh my goodness. the support here is so overwhelming in the best way possible. better than therapy haha.
thank you to everyone who left a comment reassuring me and discussing their mistakes as learning opportunities. you all made me feel not alone and truly made my day better.
i have learned so much from today’s experience and will always swing wide, avoid rest stops in the early morning, & buy a “go-girl”.
THANK YOU GUYS AGAIN.
