My 2014 Cascadia is driving me nuts again and I can’t find anything but fluff piece marketing garbage and glowing reviews online.
What it likes to do is lock itself into gear (~60% 7th, 30% 6th, 10% 5th) after I’ve been in situations with low throttle. Talking about coming off the freeway and rolling through town like a reasonable adult driver that’s trying to keep a load of less than stable material from ending up on the floor. Easy braking if any, maintaining/adjusting speed with throttle only. Same thing in traffic. When I’m trying to maintain speed and keep rolling vs jackrabbit lurching through traffic it’s a pain in the ass because it’ll shift down to a certain gear and then stop downshifting on it’s own. If I engine brake in traffic and don’t intervene it will lock in gear, bounce off the idle controller and the engine brake and lurch the absolute fuck out of everything for 5-10 seconds before unlocking the clutch (sounds and feels like I blew a u joint) before coasting in neutral for a short time while apparently reevaluating it’s decisions before shifting to the proper gear.
It’s really bad/most noticable on slight downhills where I can coast a little bit, and it happens occasionally during light braking on flat ground. And only while loaded. It’s never happened while empty or bobtailing.
When I’m empty it stops trying to downshift above 7th, when I’m bobtailing (even with engine brakes on) it basically never engine brakes. It just puts it in neutral and lets me figure out that it’s all brakes on my own.
It’s fine when it’s 100% throttle and cruise control, hard uninterrupted downshifting and braking, driving like a flip flop can hauler that doesn’t pay for fuel, load damage, breakdowns, etc.
Western star has been through it a few times. The transmission was rebuilt something like 200k ago, newer transmission computer, everything checks out like sensors and clutches and linkages (of course during test drives they just drive 50 miles down the freeway bobtail and turn around, it’ll never happen under those circumstances). No one seems to understand what the issue could possibly be and trying to explain it to techs is basically a waste of time because no codes show up and they aren’t seeing it happen.
Anyone else experience this?
