I wasn’t sure which subreddit to post this to, figured this might be a good spot to start, even if it isn’t long haul stuff.
Located in Ontario, Canada. Canada has just started enforcing the Electronic Driver’s Log, so my supervisor told me to use GeoTab Drive (links up to the GPS on the trucks automatically).
My industry has a rotation of “on call” drivers, since we provide emergency services. I almost never travel outside the 160 km radius of base, so technically I don’t need to log my hours, but the app does it for us automatically, and the MTO officer can still request my timesheets from the company get emailed to him/her on the side of the road if s/he pulls me over and I don’t have a log.
If I’m “on call” and get sent out at, say, 3 am to do an emergency job, what does that do for my Hours of Service if I’ve already worked during the day? For example, today I’ve already worked 14.5 hours (already over my HoS). I could theoretically get called out tonight for an emergency, and i’m already scheduled to do another job tomorrow morning.
Any insight on the combination of “on call” shifts, ELD’s, and emergency services? None of the Log Book materials were covered by the ministry-approved trucking academy when I went for my DZ license.
