I am just wondering if anyone knows the actual way to re-enter the freeway from the shoulder?
Just for context. I have been in or around trucking for 40 years, a driver for 15. For quite a while I have been wondering what drivers are taught about merging. I have seen many posts about merging from an on ramp but nothing about the shoulder. Twice in the last couple of months I have had a truck pull directly off the shoulder right in front of me, causing me to hard brake while trying to decide if I kill myself by hitting the truck or kill the drivers in the cars to my left. Luckily I have excellent brakes and didn’t jack knife either. Came close.
I was taught that when you absolutely have to use the shoulder, when returning to the freeway you need to accelerate on the shoulder until you reach at least 45 or higher, then signal to re-enter the flow. This gives people the chance to move over and keeps the flow more even.
Again, just curious what people know about merging.
