I’ve had my CDL for 10 years and needed it to plow snow/haul equipment at past jobs. I decided to change career paths and was recently offered an office position for a local municipality that performs similar work to what I used to do. During the interview for the office job, they found out I still had my CDL (I plan on keeping it in case I want to utilize it again someday), and they said I might be able to get a small pay bump since I have my CDL even though I wouldn’t really be driving or using it for the office position. They said in case of an emergency or if a vehicle needed to be moved I could jump in and help for something small like that. I agreed and said that would be fine if it was just for emergencies etc since I am not looking to go back to that kind of work right now.
Fast forward to today, I had to go in to pick up paperwork from the HR person and she basically said that she was still trying to find out if I would be approved for the pay bump. I said if I can’t get the pay bump I wouldn’t want to register my CDL with them since it wouldn’t benefit me at that point. She said if I don’t decide to register my CDL with them that I would lose it. She said I’d hate for you to not register it with us and end up having to retest and go through that process all over again to get your license later down the line. I thought that I could keep my CDL and upkeep the medical exams on my own time and not have to register it with my job if I’m not using it for the job. She’s making it sound like just because I happen to have a CDL and got an office job that I still have to be registered and thrown into the random drug testing pool with all the guys who actually drive for their jobs and get paid more. My thing is, I applied for an office job so if you’re not going to pay me more because of the CDL “perk” why would I want to be on the hook for being dragged into helping?
