I have an unrestricted class A and I tow boats locally. I drive pick up trucks all day but routinely with trailers over 10,000 pounds. 99% of my trips are less than 20 miles from our storage facility to any number of boat ramps, or vice versa.
The maximum legal road width in my state depends on the road, but varies between 8 feet and 8.5 feet. Pretty much any boat over 25 feet long has a beam wider than 8.5 feet. After towing a boat that was almost 11 feet wide without a permit earlier this week, I decided to double check the regulations in my state and discovered that my thinking of 9.5 feet as a maximum for no permit was wrong and in fact, it’s 8.5 feet.
I really like my job and I’m paid well, but I know this is going to be a fight with my management because we move roughly 400 boats between April and July and no one has the time to get oversized load permits for half of those moves. On top of the fact that a lot of the time we don’t know which boat we’re moving until the morning of.
I don’t know what to do but I know it’s my ass on the line if something goes wrong and I don’t have a permit so I know I need to do something. Any advice?
