(22M) I’m on my way to getting my HR in a couple weeks time (synchro) and have a broad idea of what I will be doing within the next year or 2. Don’t see a appealing future in my current industry and truck driving seems very appealing to me, I enjoy driving and spending time with myself and for the most part being in control of my time, bar work breaks, if that’s worth mentioning at all.
I’ll stick with my current company during my HR before moving on to doing my HC (non synchro) a year later and, depending on if I enjoy single trailer work, do my MC the following year. This is only because my current company isn’t a mainly transport/logistic company and use semi’s sparingly for hauling great deals of structure.
My questions were:
\-Everywhere I’ve seen is looking for experience of HC/MC, at the lower end at least a year and on the top end 5. Where do I get the experience being an eventual newbie HC driver? Or will some companies see my to-be experience as a HR driver? Is cold calling transport companies still viable? Or do I try my hand at putting in countless resumes?
\-Because my work is based in and around metro Melbourne, has anyone used the app TruckWiz for navigation, if so how would they rate it? Being there is heaps of low bridges in and around Melbourne this seems like a perfect app and even if I don’t currently work in a full time truck driving job it still might be worth getting?
\-Any owner operators or business owners? I might be a bit ambitious and maybe I haven’t done nearly enough research but outside of the cost of the truck, how far fetched is owning and running my own transport company? Are there costs that regular people looking outside-in wouldn’t notice? Insurances, maintenance and licenses are the obvious ones but what might I be missing?
TIA and safe driving.
