The pension went from 14 percent funded to 97 percent funded with the help of congress and the president in 2021. Barring another major pandemic or ww3, this generosity probably won’t happen again in our life times. But if most newer warehouses go automated (which naturally lowers the wage/pension contributions due to there being no strenuous labor…plus evidence of amazon and c&s paying drastically lower for automated warehouses vs the high manual labor order selectors), then that leaves truck drivers to make up the bulk of future class 18 pension contributions. So are there any takers right now? Currently 20 years will get you about 2300-2500 a month…which doesn’t rise with inflation. So in a world where the dow is 100,000, how far will 2500 a month get you in the 2030s or even 2040s?
I makes me wonder if the 97 percent funded figure is based off of the assumption that the mulit empolyer concept won’t the have employers exiting or simply dropping off the board due to newer yards/warehouses that opt out of the pension.
