Hey y’all, sorry in advance for this long post! I am a 37 yo right below-knee amputee trying to change careers from a desk to a truck. I’ve been sans right foot for 11 years and up until a few years ago I drove a stick shift as my daily. Now I have a daughter and so I have succumbed to the dreary automatic SUV. I drive cars just fine, but I went to a trucking school the other day and I found their truck pedals (Pete 379 I think it was) are floor mounted. That’s great for everyone else with an ankle but for me my sense of feeling comes from my knee. Floor mounted pedals make me use my hip joint to “lift and drop” my foot on top of pedals, which means I can’t be as precise in applying pressure (i.e. I may jam on the brake rather than smoothly applying it). I know this could be truck dependent as I believe Volvo VNLs and some newer international trucks have pedals that are more like car pedals.
Anyone know an amputee out there like me who’s trucking that I can talk to?
Anyone know a CDL school in Colorado that has modern trucks with hanging or “car like” pedals?
