Headed up 41 North in Wisconsin around mile marker 75 near Kewauskum. 6am or so – it’s pitch black. I’m pretty much alone on this stretch as there’s no one behind me as far as I can see and I barely see taillights ahead of me. I’m in the right lane. All of a sudden I see a figure moving from the right shoulder, and discover it’s a person stumbling right along the white line. I immediately swerve left and slam on my brakes, knowing it was clear, and as I do, the guy stumbles out 4-5 feet into the right lane. I look back forward and start coming to a stop on the left shoulder throwing my oversize light bar on and my flashers and look forward and see a car t-boned the wire guard rail on the south bound lanes about a hundred feet ahead and the car is smoking, front end DESTROYED, airbags all deployed. No other cars around it, no one else stopped southbound. So this guy must have gotten into the accident, stumbled across the highway and is now walking straight into oncoming traffic. As I’m grabbing my phone and dialing 911, I see red and blue lights coming behind in the distance so I stay in my truck so I don’t get hit too. I tell the dispatcher and she cuts me off and says yeah they got another call and an officer should be there shortly. I explained he’s walking in the northbound lanes and I almost hit him like a deer as he fell Into the lane. She said that it hadn’t been reported he was walking, she got on the radio and I heard 10-4 making contact now, so she told me I was ok to leave and took all my info.
I don’t know if the guy fell asleep, hit the guard rail and was so dazed he was walking down the highway, or if he was drunk and doing it, or if he was trying to get away. I don’t know. I just know that I was less than a second of reaction time away from splattering him all over the road. I pulled up to the next exit and sat on the ramp for a little bit til I calmed down.
